How to tie the Bimini Twist knot
A double-line knot that creates a long loop of doubled line with near full line strength. It is the foundation of offshore leader systems and shock absorption for big fish.
Best for
Building a double-line class connection for offshore trolling and big game, giving you a strong loop to connect leaders and absorb sudden shock loads.
Strength
Very strong, near 100 percent of line strength as a double line
Difficulty

Tying the Bimini Twist, step by step
- 1Double the line to form a loop of the length you want, then put twenty or more twists in it.
- 2Spread the loop over your knees or a solid anchor to hold tension on the twists.
- 3Increase tension so the twists roll back over themselves down toward the standing line.
- 4Guide the wraps to pack neatly and evenly as they roll down.
- 5Secure the wraps with a half hitch around one leg of the loop.
- 6Finish with several rolling half hitches around both legs, then wet and cinch tight.
- 7Trim the tag end close to the finished knot.
Tips
- • Keep firm, steady tension throughout so the twists pack down evenly without gaps.
- • Two people or a knee-spread method makes a long Bimini much easier to control.
Strengths
- + Retains essentially full line strength
- + Creates a shock-absorbing double line for big game
Watch out for
- - Time consuming and hard to tie well
- - Difficult to manage solo on a moving boat
