How to tie the Dropper Loop knot
A loop tied in the middle of a line that stands out at an angle, letting you attach a hook or teaser off the main line. It is the backbone of many bottom rigs.
Best for
Building bottom rigs and multi-hook setups for bottom fishing, adding a teaser above a jig, or presenting a bait off the mainline.
Strength
Moderate to strong, commonly 70 to 90 percent depending on line and loop size
Difficulty
moderate
Tying the Dropper Loop, step by step
- 1Form a large loop in the middle of your line.
- 2Wrap one side of the loop around the standing line five to seven times, keeping an opening in the center.
- 3Pinch the center opening so it stays open.
- 4Push the bottom of the original loop up through that center opening.
- 5Wet the knot and pull both standing ends apart to draw the wraps tight around the loop.
- 6Adjust so the loop stands out at an angle, then check that it is seated evenly.
Tips
- • Keep the center opening pinched with a finger or hook so it does not close before you pass the loop through.
- • A shorter, stiffer loop stands out from the mainline better and tangles less.
Strengths
- + Presents a bait or teaser off the mainline
- + Great for multi-hook bottom rigs
Watch out for
- - Loses strength as loop size increases
- - Fiddly to tie neatly by hand
