How to tie the Albright Knot knot
Also known as Albright Special.
A line-to-line knot built for joining lines of very different diameters or materials, such as braid to a heavy mono or wire leader. It stays relatively slim for a mixed join.
Best for
Connecting braid to a heavy shock leader, or joining mono to wire for toothy fish, where the two lines differ a lot in thickness.
Strength
Strong, commonly 80 to 90 percent of line strength
Difficulty
moderate
Tying the Albright Knot, step by step
- 1Form a loop in the heavier line or wire and hold it pinched.
- 2Pass the lighter line through the loop, leaving a long tag to work with.
- 3Wrap the lighter line back over both strands of the loop ten to twelve times, working toward the loop's end.
- 4Feed the lighter tag back out through the loop, exiting the same side it entered.
- 5Wet the knot and pull the wraps snug against the end of the loop.
- 6Seat both standing lines firmly and trim the tag ends close.
Tips
- • Keep the wraps neat and snug against each other so they do not slip off the loop when seated.
- • Use more wraps with lighter or slicker line for a more secure grip.
Strengths
- + Joins very different diameters and materials
- + Reasonably slim for a mixed connection
Watch out for
- - Can slip if wraps are uneven or too few
- - Takes practice to seat cleanly
