How to tie the Double Uni Knot knot
Two uni knots tied facing each other to join two lines, most often connecting braid main line to a mono or fluoro leader. It is easy to learn and widely trusted.
Best for
Joining braid to a leader for inshore and light offshore work, and connecting lines of similar or moderately different diameters.
Strength
Strong and reliable, commonly 80 to 90 percent depending on line pairing
Difficulty
moderate
Tying the Double Uni Knot, step by step
- 1Overlap the ends of the two lines you want to join by about six inches.
- 2Using one line, form a uni knot around the other line with five to six wraps.
- 3Repeat with the second line, wrapping around the first line the same number of times.
- 4Wet both knots thoroughly.
- 5Pull the two standing lines in opposite directions so the knots slide together and seat.
- 6Trim both tag ends close to the finished knot.
Tips
- • Use more wraps on the thinner braid side, such as six or seven, and fewer on the heavier leader.
- • Cinch each knot down individually a bit before drawing them together for a cleaner seat.
Strengths
- + Easy to learn for a line-to-line connection
- + Handles braid-to-leader joins well
Watch out for
- - Bulkier than an FG knot and can catch in guides
- - Weakens when diameters are very different
