How to tie the FG Knot knot
A slim, high-strength braid-to-leader connection that relies on friction from the braid biting into the leader. Its thin profile passes through rod guides smoothly for casting.
Best for
Connecting braid to fluoro or mono leaders when you need a low-profile, high-strength join for casting distance, from surf to offshore.
Strength
Very strong, near 90 to 100 percent of line strength when tied correctly

Tying the FG Knot, step by step
- 1Keep the braid under tension, wrapping it around your hand or a tool.
- 2Weave the leader over and under the taut braid, alternating sides for about twenty passes.
- 3Pinch the wraps to keep them tight, then secure them with several half hitches using the braid tag.
- 4Add a few more half hitches with both the braid tag and leader to lock the knot.
- 5Wet the knot and cinch everything down firmly.
- 6Trim the leader tag close, then trim the braid tag, leaving a small tag if desired.
Tips
- • Maintain steady tension on the braid the entire time, since slack ruins the friction wraps.
- • Practice at home before relying on it on the water, as the technique takes repetition to master.
Strengths
- + Extremely thin and strong
- + Passes through guides for long casts
Watch out for
- - Difficult and slow to tie, especially in wind or on a rocking boat
