How to tie the Blood Knot knot
Also known as Barrel Knot.
A slim, symmetrical knot for joining two lines of similar diameter, prized for its clean profile that runs through guides. It is a classic for building tapered leaders.
Best for
Joining mono or fluoro lines of similar diameter, especially when building leaders or splicing line where a low-profile join is needed.
Strength
Strong, around 85 to 95 percent of line strength on similar diameters
Difficulty
moderate
Tying the Blood Knot, step by step
- 1Overlap the two lines and wrap one tag end around the other line five to seven times.
- 2Bring that tag end back and pass it between the two lines where they cross.
- 3Wrap the second tag end around the first line the same number of times in the opposite direction.
- 4Pass the second tag end back through the same center gap, from the opposite side.
- 5Wet the knot and pull both standing lines to draw the wraps together.
- 6Seat the knot firmly and trim both tag ends close.
Tips
- • Match the wrap count on both sides so the knot seats evenly and stays symmetrical.
- • Wet thoroughly before cinching, since the tight coils generate heat that can weaken the line.
Strengths
- + Slim, streamlined profile
- + Excellent for similar diameter leader building
Watch out for
- - Not suited to lines of very different diameter
- - Fiddly to tie in cold or windy conditions
