How to tie the Improved Clinch Knot knot
Also known as Fisherman's Knot.
A classic, fast knot for tying monofilament or fluorocarbon to a hook, lure, or swivel. It is one of the first knots most anglers learn and it holds well on lighter lines.
Best for
Everyday inshore and light saltwater fishing with mono or fluoro up to about 20 pound test, tying on hooks, jigheads, swivels, and small lures.
Strength
Strong, roughly 85 to 95 percent of line strength in light to medium mono and fluoro
Difficulty
easy
Tying the Improved Clinch Knot, step by step
- 1Pass the tag end through the eye of the hook or lure.
- 2Wrap the tag end around the standing line five to seven times.
- 3Bring the tag end back and pass it through the small loop just above the eye.
- 4Now pass the tag end through the big loop you just formed.
- 5Wet the knot and pull the standing line slowly to draw the wraps tight against the eye.
- 6Trim the tag end close to the knot.
Tips
- • Always wet the knot with saliva or water before cinching to prevent friction burn that weakens the line.
- • Use fewer wraps on heavier line and more wraps on lighter line so the coils seat cleanly.
Strengths
- + Quick and easy to tie
- + Reliable on light to medium lines
Watch out for
- - Loses strength on heavy or slick fluorocarbon
- - Can slip if the wraps are not seated evenly
