How to tie the Rapala Knot knot
A fixed loop knot developed for hard baits that lets a lure swing and dive with an unrestricted action. The open loop keeps the line from choking the lure's movement.
Best for
Fishing minnow plugs, jerkbaits, and other hard baits where you want maximum lure action, common in inshore casting for predators.
Strength
Strong, around 85 to 95 percent of line strength
Difficulty
moderate
Tying the Rapala Knot, step by step
- 1Tie a loose overhand knot in the line several inches from the tag end.
- 2Pass the tag end through the hook or lure eye, then back up through the overhand knot.
- 3Wrap the tag end around the standing line three to four times.
- 4Bring the tag end back down and pass it through the overhand knot again.
- 5Pass the tag end through the new loop just formed.
- 6Wet the knot, set the loop size, then pull the standing line and tag to seat it.
- 7Trim the tag end close to the finished knot.
Tips
- • Set the loop size before final tightening so the lure has room to swing.
- • Wet the knot well so the wraps seat smoothly without burning the line.
Strengths
- + Frees a hard bait to swim naturally
- + Strong loop connection for casting lures
Watch out for
- - More steps than a fixed clinch knot
- - Loop can foul if left too large
