How to tie the San Diego Jam Knot knot

Also known as Reverse Clinch.

A West Coast favorite for connecting line to hooks and jigs, especially with heavier line and live bait. It seats cleanly and holds up under the hard runs of big fish.

Best for

Live bait fishing for tuna, yellowtail, and other hard-pulling species, and any time you want a strong terminal knot on medium to heavy line.

Strength

Very strong, near 95 percent of line strength on mono, fluoro, and braid

Difficulty

moderate

Tying the San Diego Jam Knot, step by step

  1. 1Pass the tag end through the eye and pull about ten inches through.
  2. 2Hold the hook and run the tag end back up alongside the doubled standing line.
  3. 3Wrap the tag end down around both lines five to seven times, working toward the hook.
  4. 4Pass the tag end through the loop formed near the eye.
  5. 5Wet the knot and pull the standing line to draw the wraps together snugly.
  6. 6Seat the knot against the eye and trim the tag end.

Tips

  • Wet the knot well before seating, as this knot is often tied in heavier line that heats up under friction.
  • Use more wraps on lighter line and fewer on heavy line for a clean, tight seat.

  • + Very strong on heavy line
  • + Trusted for live bait and big pelagics
