How to tie the Palomar Knot knot
A simple doubled-line knot that is among the strongest connections for tying line to a hook, swivel, or lure. It is especially trusted with braided line.
Best for
Tying braid to hooks, jigs, swivels, and lures where maximum knot strength matters, from inshore jigging to bottom fishing.
Strength
Very strong, near 95 percent of line strength and excellent with braid
Difficulty
easy
Tying the Palomar Knot, step by step
- 1Double about six inches of line and pass the loop through the eye of the hook.
- 2Tie a simple overhand knot with the doubled line, leaving the hook hanging from the loop.
- 3Pass the hook or lure completely through the open loop.
- 4Wet the knot, then pull the standing line and tag end to draw it tight.
- 5Seat the knot firmly against the eye and trim the tag end.
Tips
- • Keep the loop open when you pass the hook through so the knot does not tangle.
- • Moisten the knot well before cinching, since braid can bite into itself when dry.
Strengths
- + Extremely strong, especially with braid
- + Fast to tie once learned
Watch out for
- - Awkward with large lures or treble hooks
- - Uses more line than a simple clinch
